Goldfish

Realistic goldfish, lit like a studio portrait. Your fish come from nine real varieties, with metallic or calico scales that catch the light as they turn, and they are still here when you come back. Keep one to ten in the tank. Click or tap to call them over, and double-click or double-tap to feed them; they will come to the glass to beg.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Goldfish?

Goldfish is a realistic 3D goldfish simulator. You keep one to ten fish, each drawn from nine real varieties (common, comet, shubunkin, wakin, fantail, ryukin, oranda, ranchu and telescope) and seven colors, with its own body shape, fins and scales, rendered live in WebGL2.

Is Goldfish free?

Yes. Goldfish is completely free with no hidden limits, no account, no ads in the tank and no feature gates. It runs on your own device.

How do I feed the goldfish?

Click or tap anywhere in the water and the fish swim over to that spot. Double-click or double-tap to drop a few pellets, or press Feed now on the Tank tab for a pinch. The pellets float for a moment, then sink; switch Food to flakes that float if you want the fish to come to the surface. A goldfish noses up to one, opens its mouth and flares its gills, and the rush of water pulls the pellet in; then it chews, and now and then spits a pellet out and takes it again. Scroll or pinch to zoom in or out; the fish keep to what you can see. Right-click a fish, or long-press it on a touch screen, to open its name in the settings panel, ready to change.

Does Goldfish collect my data?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser using JavaScript and WebGL. Nothing is uploaded, there are no servers, and there is no tracking beyond basic anonymous page analytics.

What goldfish varieties can appear?

The nine varieties are the common, comet, shubunkin, wakin, fantail, ryukin, oranda, ranchu and telescope. Single-tailed commons, comets and shubunkins have long, slim bodies and forked tails. Twin-tailed wakins, fantails and ryukins have deeper bodies and a pair of tails that splay apart; the ryukin also has a tall shoulder hump, the oranda grows a bumpy hood called a wen over its head, the ranchu has a wen, a smoothly arched back with no dorsal fin and a short tucked tail, and the telescope's eyes stand out from its head on cone-shaped stalks. Colors are metallic orange, red, red and white, yellow, calico, black, and red cap (white with a red crown); a black telescope is called a black moor.

Why do some goldfish look metallic and others look pearly?

The difference is the scale type. Metallic goldfish have a thick layer of guanine crystals in their scales that works like a mirror, so the orange or red pigment on top shines like gold. Calico (nacreous) goldfish have little guanine, so their scales look translucent and pearly, with blue, black and orange patches underneath.

Can I keep more than one goldfish?

Yes. Open the settings panel and press Add a fish, up to ten. Every fish gets its own name, which you can change, and you can restyle, follow with the camera or release any one of them, or press Keep just one fish to clear the tank down to one. They share the food, compete for it and keep their distance from each other.

Can I choose which goldfish I get?

Yes. Open a fish in the settings panel and pick its variety and color, or set the variety and color for new arrivals. New look for every fish (or the N key) restyles the whole tank without reloading the page, and Randomize, at the bottom of the panel, picks how many fish there are and every one's variety, color, size and personality, with Undo for a few seconds after.

Can I save a picture or video of my goldfish?

Yes. Press S to save a 4K PNG of the moment on screen (or the largest size your device can make), or open Capture from the settings panel. Stills go up to 4K as PNG, JPEG or WebP, or straight to the clipboard. Videos of 5, 10 or 30 seconds download as MP4 (WebM in browsers without an MP4 encoder, such as Firefox) with the tank sound if it is on, and GIFs of up to 8 seconds are 256-color, best for short clips. Every format starts from the same paused moment, in 16:9, 9:16, square, a 1200x630 social size or the shape of your screen.

Do the goldfish have personalities?

Yes. Each fish is bold or shy, quick or slow, and restless or lazy, and has a favorite part of the tank, so they spread out and behave differently. Shy fish may ignore your pointer while bold ones swim up to it. Open a fish in the settings panel to see and change its personality and its size, from baby to big. Swim speed and a day-and-night light that follows your clock are on the Tank tab.

Can I change the background behind the fish?

Yes. In the settings panel, the Tank tab has Backdrop: black, one of eight colors or any color you pick, a gradient (top to bottom, a glow from the middle, or diagonal, from six ready-made pairs or your own two colors), or your own image, with sliders to blur and dim it so the fish stand out. A Vignette slider darkens the corners, from off to strong, and Randomize backdrop picks a new color or gradient for you. The image stays on your device, the fins show it through them, and distant fish fade toward it the way they would in water.

Does Goldfish have sound?

Yes, off until you turn it on in the Sound tab. The bubbles, filter hum, gulps, chewing and landing food are all made live in your browser from how real bubbles ring, with no recordings, and you can set each one separately.

Does Goldfish remember my fish?

Yes. Your fish, their names and looks, and your feeding and camera settings are saved on this device, so the same fish come back on your next visit, starting in new spots. A new tank starts with a full-grown fish; fish you add arrive young and grow to their adult size over about two weeks of real time. Export tank saves them as a file you can import on another device, Share a link to this tank sends them to a friend without touching the friend's own fish, and Start a fresh tank begins again with one new fish.

Can I use Goldfish as a screensaver?

Yes. Press F, or Fullscreen on the Tank tab. In fullscreen the pointer hides after a moment of stillness and the screen stays awake where the browser allows it. Set the Auto-feeder and the Slow drift camera, and the tank looks after itself.

Does Goldfish work on my phone?

Yes. It runs on phones, tablets and computers with WebGL2, which most browsers from 2021 on support. It lowers its own rendering resolution if the device struggles. iPhone Safari does not offer the Fullscreen button.

How does Goldfish compare to Deskworlds?

Goldfish is built from the open-source Betta scene in Deskworlds by Chase Lean, rebuilt as a goldfish. Deskworlds is a macOS desktop wallpaper you install from source; Goldfish is a single web page that runs in any modern browser on any device, with nine goldfish varieties instead of one betta.
