A quiet place to wander.
Explore a new moonlit valley, follow the lanterns, or rise above the snowy forest. Every
world grows from a seed.
If moving through the valley makes you queasy, turn off Walking sway under Explore in
Settings, and widen Field of view.
Settings stay on this device. The address bar always carries the seed of the world you
are in, so reloading or sharing the link brings you back to it. “Create a new world”
changes the landscape; “Find another place” moves you within it. Under World, “Export
settings” saves every setting and the seed as a file you can import on another device;
“Reset to defaults” resets preferences, not the landscape.
Sound begins after you interact with the scene or a sound control. The Sound category
has separate controls for snow crunch, wind, and original evolving music. Footsteps
accompany walking.
Procedural landscape, sky, trees, snow deposits, and architecture. Built with Three.js.
Bark, needle, and rock material sources: Poly Haven, CC0. Snow crunch, wind, and music
are synthesized as you explore. Water normals: Three.js, MIT.
Three.js loads from jsDelivr; typefaces load from Google Fonts. Internet access is
needed for these. Scenery and sound are generated on your device.
What is Winter Wonderland?
Winter Wonderland is a browser walking simulator set in a moonlit
alpine valley. The terrain, forest, lake, cabins, sky, and starting
point are generated from a numeric seed, so every new world is a
different landscape. You walk with W A S D, look with the mouse, and
press F to fly. Snow crunch, wind, and the soundtrack are synthesized
as you go rather than played from recordings.
Is Winter Wonderland free?
Yes. Winter Wonderland is completely free, with no account, no
watermarks, no time limits, and no feature gates. Settings are saved
in your own browser, and nothing you do is uploaded.
How do I get back to a world I liked?
Copy the address bar. Winter Wonderland writes the world seed into the
URL as ?seed=, so the link rebuilds the same valley on any device, and
Share this world in Settings copies it for you. Settings under World
also lists the worlds you have visited on this device, and every
picture you save is named with its seed. Paste a seed or a shared link
into the World seed field to return.
Can I save a picture or a video of the view?
Yes. Open Settings and press Capture at the bottom. Still saves a 4K
PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 8K on desktop computers, in landscape,
portrait, square or a 1200 by 630 social size. Video saves an MP4
(WebM in Firefox) with the music and wind: a timed clip of the view
while the snow falls, or your walk until you press Stop. GIF makes a
short looping clip; it has 256 colours, so it suits short loops. P
saves a picture straight away and R starts or stops a video. Every
file name carries the world seed.
Can I leave Winter Wonderland running as winter ambience?
Yes. Turn on Auto explore under Explore in Settings, or press E, and
Winter Wonderland walks and flies through the world on its own for as
long as you leave it, taking turns if both are ticked, while snow
falls, chimney smoke drifts, and the wind and soundtrack play. It
keeps the screen awake while it runs, and adding ?auto=1 to the
address starts it by itself. Unlike a looped ambience video, every
sound is synthesized live, so nothing repeats. Touch any control to
take over.
What is a world seed?
A world seed is the number Winter Wonderland feeds its generators. The
same seed always produces the same hills, forest, lake, villages, sky,
and starting point, so a seed is a permanent address for a landscape
rather than a saved file. A word works too; Winter Wonderland turns it
into a number. Changing the seed changes the whole valley, while
settings such as snowfall or brightness leave it alone.
What do I need to run Winter Wonderland?
Winter Wonderland needs a browser with WebGL 2 and an internet
connection for the first load, which fetches Three.js from jsDelivr
and the typefaces from Google Fonts. It runs in current Chrome, Edge,
and Firefox, and in Safari 16.4 or later, including iPhone and iPad,
where an on-screen stick replaces W A S D. On a slower machine it
lowers Picture detail by itself to keep the walk smooth.
How does Winter Wonderland compare to Proteus?
Proteus, the 2013 game by Ed Key and David Kanaga, is the closest
relative: a wordless walk across a generated island whose music
answers what you pass. It is a paid download for computers and
consoles. Winter Wonderland is a free web page that opens in a tab,
stays in one moonlit winter valley instead of moving through seasons,
and hands you each world's seed so you can return to it or send it to
someone.
